It's Not About the Orgasm

Betty and I used to see each other three times a week and every Friday, rain or shine, we did a video and posted it to youtube. When I had Grayson, I took 3 months off. Thereafter, we got together at least once a week to do our video. Now that we're in the "Terrible Twos" and Betty's apartment is anything but baby proofed we haven't been coming in at all.

It's a stage, and will be over before I know it, but I miss Betty and want to get back to our Friday video schedule. The emails/comments begging us to do more clips sting when I read them. Suffice it to say, I was really looking forward to this past weekend's workshop - spending time with Betty and 6 other women from Canada, Beijing, the UK, Texas and right here in New York.

One Of The Best Orgasms I've EVER Had Came From An 85-Year-Old Woman

Jenny Block took a workshop about a year ago and has been writen several pieces about the experience. Just when I think she's written the best article about the workshops and Betty's brilliance she tops herself.

Here's a brief description of her orgasm during erotic recess "with" Betty's instruction (her full article is here):

"Virgin Priestess"

Betty did a series of market drawings in 2004 that she called her "granny porn".  This is one of my favorite images.

Our Bodysex Workshop Manual on Amazon

We wrote this book for our certification program. Our future Bodysex leaders wanted a manual, a step-by-step process with pictures, detailing how to run a workshop from beginning to end.

I'm not sure how I found the time to write this book but somehow it all came together with ease. The stars aligned because womankind demanded it.

When Betty saw the proof copy of this book, she remarked, "it's such a sweet book. This will be our Bodysex bible".

Here it is on Amazon. Our hope is that Bodysex spreads across the globe so that future generations of women can learn how to love themselves and their bodies.

Only the Inkling of an Orgy

This is one of Betty's earlier paintings.

I love her group nudes because you can see something brewing in her work - her nudes are restless looking for more.  In only a few years, Betty would join America's Sexual Revolution, her nudes would start fornicating, and she'd became a feminist icon.

Ovaries & Whimsy

One of our Bodysex women - an Israeli artist - sent me this image and I love it.  The whimsy, the eroticism, the beauty speak to me.

This is how I see womankind.

The Power of Visibility

Evan Rachel Wood's acceptance speech is so powerful because she describes what it feels like to grow up "bisexual" without a clear understanding of your orientation.  This is my favorite line, "I see you.  You see me.  We aren't so different.  Through connection the healing begins".

I feel the same way about Bodysex.  When we connect...when we are seen and we see each other we are healed.

If Women Were Assigned Power...

These are my two favorite paintings from artist Felice House.

After moving from the Northeast to Austin, she fell if love with the concept of the "West" and thought about the roles women were relegated to, inspiring her to replace the cowboys in iconic (male-dominated) Western art with women.

Her work says so much about power dynamics and gender roles.  Her paintings are 1.25 life-sized so the women are larger than the viewer, "when you see them in person, people are surprised by the scale. People aren't used to women towering over them."

Just breathtaking.

Best Arrest Photo from Day Without A Woman

A big thank you to Tamika Mallory, Linda Sarsour, Carmen Perez and Bob Bland - the four main organizers of the Women's March - who were arrested yesterday protesting outside Trump Tower in nyc for A Day Without A Woman (9 other protestors were also arrested).

This is the best arrest photo ever. Wish I could have been there but motherhood and raising a feminist son is my priority right now. I keep looking for numbers on yesterday's global strike *fingerscrossed*.

Feminism has finally gone mainstream.

Jacqueline Secor's Vulva Art

It seems like vulva art is popping up everywhere and I'm loving Jacqueline Secor's work.  Each image captures a "vulva style" and almost all have dangling inner lips.

She began painting vulvas to deal with some body dysmorphia issues she was having living in Utah where there's only one definition of beauty.  Looking forward to viewing more of her work.

Natural Cycles is a Birth Control App as Effective as the Pill

This is the kind of news that gets my clit rock hard.  Elina Berglund, a nuclear physicist, has developed a birth control app that's as effective as the pill.  All you have to do is take your temperature under your tongue each morning and enter the info into the app.  Then your smart phone lets you know when you're fertile and when you're not.  I would just synch it to my calendar.

Who Would Think a Victorian Nude Would Push Buttons

These nude photographs were part of a Valentine's exhibition at the South Downs Heritage Centre.  After receiving a slew of complaints, the gallery pulled them before rethinking it and reinstating them a few days later.

Incredible that nude photographs from the Victorian era would push so many buttons.  I love the real bodies and the playfulness.  Beautiful.

A Betty Dodson Valentine

I love the sentiment of this Valentine Betty drew in 1987.

First, she dedicates it to herself (I think she should be credited with the selflove movement) and then the love she has for "all my friends, lovers and strangers all over planet earth".

The Absence of Pleasure Leads to Systemic Violence

Natasha posted a link to James Prescott's research on body pleasure and the origins of violence. I read through the dense extract and it was life affirming. We have instincts that, at times, we question. Everything Betty teaches through her books and the workshops can be quantified. Touch and pleasure inhibit violence across the board.

It starts with maternal touch as infants. Cultures that support mothers, don't sexualize breastfeeding toddlers, and encourage general affection have less violence. The concept that pain is useful in child-rearing produces angry, aggressive adolescents and adults. Here's an interesting wrinkle: mothers who didn't experience orgasm were more likely to abuse their children.

Feminism at the Superbowl

I don't think we've ever had a more policitized Superbowl.  Most of the ads had a clear pro-diversity theme and it made me proud to be an American.

Then there was this moment when the Schuyler Sisters from the cast of Hamilton sang America the Beautiful and inserted "sisterhood" after the line "and crown thy hood in brotherhood"...it was electric:

Maybe we needed some push back to pave the way for true equality.   The people have spoken.
