Handling Your Mastectomy with Humor

Aniela McGuinness is a 32-year-old actress who was diagnosed with breast cancer. She decided to have a preventative mastectomy AND to document her experience with a little flair, and a little humor.

She starts with Rosie the Riveter pre-mastectomy...becomes the Bride of Frankenstein post-mastectomy and then a Fembot post-chemo when she went bald.

I love her spirit and that she held her head high and laughed at herself. If only we all could handle our ever changing bodies with the same courage and acceptance. This woman is brilliant.

Historic Objectification

This is a photo of an ankle contest.  Maybe the woman's faces would confuse the judges but looking at this image, it's so fucking ridiculous that I can't believe it's real.

And we wonder why pundits commented on Hillary's "cankles".  I would imagine that thicker ankles would be stronger and help you do useful things like run or lift things but why would a woman's body need to be anything but pleasing to the male gaze.

Government Minus Men

Thank you, Elle UK, for photoshopping the men out of these pictures of parliament and the G8 to show how women are barely represented in government.

A picture is worth a thousand words.  Women hold roughly 14% of the seats in Congress (you need 42% to have an influence).  And it's no better over in the UK.  I have to admit that the image of Merkel kind of gets me hot.  She's such a bad ass.

Change is coming.

Thank you, Alejandra Pino, for adding spanish subtitles to our video clip of Betty drawing the internal clitoris. Everything we do here at D&R is copyleft and Creative Commons.

We want people to take our work, translate it, and take it mass:

Things My Dick Does is officially my new favorite tumblr blog. His stated intention is wonderful:

I've always wondered what my dick does in the times he is up before I am. He must get so bored waiting for me to wake up. Happens EVERY day. Poor little guy :\ Feel free to say hello to the little guy via inbox message.

Adorable...brilliant...in love with the condom pics.

We Have to Support Meryl & Her Movie

Meryl Streep put together these t-shirts "I'd Rather be a Rebel Than a Slave" to promote her new film Suffragette (as the great granddaughter of a suffragette I can't wait to see this movie).  Unfortunately, it started a shit storm on twitter about race and feminism.

I'm so sick of these arguments that divide us as women.  Yes, black women (just like lesbians) were marginalized and co-opted by second wave feminists and that was wrong.  But let's agree on one thing: we're all fucked.

Women Try a Menstrual Cup for the First Time

For the record, I love my menstrual cup.  It takes a bit to learn how to insert it properly (just fold it in half, push out with your pc muscle, insert and let it open, then run your finger around the entire cup to make sure it's all set.  And when you want to take it out just push out with your pc muscle).

Thank you, Buzzfeed, for making this video of women trying a menstrual cup for the first time.  It's so easy and protects you from the carcinogenic chemicals found in most pads and tampons.  And there's no risk of toxic shock.

The Walk of No Shame...My Utopia

If only we celebrated women who had sex, heading home the next day in the same clothes they wore the night before.

I remember being shamed when I would crawl home in the wee hours of the morning after a night of sex.  Walking past my doorman and AM neighbors was the worst.

I love this clip:

What a Difference a Year Makes

I've spent the last few days out east with my parents in the home where I grew up. Daddy is on a business trip and I was nervous to stay home alone with Grayson. He's 6 months and teething so I need to be relieved here and there to take a shower or manage D&R.

It's been rewarding to watch my parents interact with their grandson. Somehow it heals the wounds of the past. Maybe it's because we have a new common interest, I don't know. But to watch Grayson and my mother growl at each other at breakfast reminds me of the happy times of my childhood.

I Knew Having Grayson on My Nipple was Best

Grayson is 6 months old and I'm still breastfeeding round the clock. He loves yogurt and bananas in the morning but always finishes up breakfast with a breast nosh.

I do all the things the "experts" frown upon: I nurse on demand and during the night because he sleeps in bed with us. And I've taken alot of heat for not pumping my breast milk. I did it - I had the pump sitting in his room for months but I couldn't bring myself to hook it up and put my milk in a bottle.

I Believed the Man Who Raped Me had Permanently Damaged Me

One of the things that I'm most proud of is that the work we're doing is evergreen. When Betty pens a new essay or we produce a new video, I imagine people viewing it a century from now.

This comment came in over the weekend on a post Betty had written about a private session she had with a woman who'd survived FGM (female genital mutilation). 6 years later and it's still relevant. Whether we've experienced a physical or psychological cutting from trauma the result is the same - shame:

Happy Birthday Dr. Dodson

You make 86 look good.  I can't believe that we've been working together for 10 years.  It's been the best decade of my life.  Thank you for being you.

Pregnant She-Devil = Perfection

This pregnant she-devil statue mysteriously appeared on a pedestal in the Grandview Woodlands neighborhood in Vancouver.

Last September the city took down the first unsolicited sculpture - the red devil with an erection.  Residents are calling the statues a couple.  I call them perfection.

Learning to Love My C-Section Scar

Natasha published this photograph on FB and I had to republish it here.  In our workshops, women always share their feelings of shame over having a c-section.  Their scars are a constant reminder of failure.

I was totally shocked that I ended up with a c-section after laboring for 15 hours.  How could I be orgasmic - have the perfect birthing hips and a killer pc muscle - and NOT be able to squeeze a baby out through my vagina?  I decided to love my c-section scar because it's a symbol of success.

I'm not going to buy into any bs that I'm less of a woman because I needed a little help releasing the life I created into this world.  My scar is beautiful and my son is amazing.

Leda & the Swan

This is one of my favorite drawings Betty did back in the 70's.  I scanned a slide of Leda and had it blown up and mounted on plexi glass.  It hangs in my home office.  During the day my eyes drift to Leda and I smile.

You can buy a print if you love it as much as I do.
